Cabo de São Vincente - mistery place in the end of Europe / Przylądek Świętego Wincenta - tajemnicze miasto na końcu Europy

Ahoy!

Did you ever by visiting one place has torn inside of you not described by extreme emotions? As if in one moment you feel the excitement and freedom, and after a while sadness and terror grows in you? I was just as I had when I found myself at the end of Europe. At Cape St. Vincent I could feel a strong energy, through which for a long moment, I felt terribly confused and did not know what was happening to me. Have you ever wondered how suicide feels before the decision to take his own life? Frankly, I never deeper thought about it, until I arrived at THIS place. Suddenly feeling came over me that I want to jump off a cliff. I wanted to know how it really is. What is at your head during the following down. I have no idea why this happened to me...

Cape St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente) is located 6 km from the town named Sagres. Can be found it the most distant south-western point of Europe. It is interesting that the Middle Ages, Europeans believed that this place is the real end of the world.

In the Cape, you can find the lighthouse originates from 1846. The lighthouse was constructed on the old ruins of a Franciscan monastery. This monastery paid homage to Saint Vicente, whose bones were reputedly found in the cliffs and to whom the headland is named after. The bones of Saint Vicente were moved from the shire at Cabo Sao Vicente to Lisbon in 1147 as part of populous propaganda activity to bolster the Christian conquest of Portugal. The destructive 1755 earthquake badly damaged the monastery and this was never repaired. The two sacred statues of Saint Vincent and Francis Xavier were moved to the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça in Sagres. Going back to the lighthouse. The numerous of the maritime trade routes that function for centuries the lighthouse light was constructed so that it is visible from a distance of up to 60 km.

Wracając do latarnii.

Before naming the cape in honor of St. Vincent, in the pre-Christian times, when the land was taken over by the Roman Empire, the peninsula was called the Holy Cape (lat. Promontorium Sacrum) to celebrate the last place where everybody could see the sunset.

Cape St. Vincent was also the place of many sea battles in the years 1693 and 1780. The first battle took place during the nine-year war between the Augsburg League and France. While the second war ended in victory for the British fleet, which fought against the Spanish fleet. The battle was called the "Battle of the moonlight", due to the fact that began about four o'clock in the night, when the British ships caught Spaniards at the height of Cape St. Vincent.

Our plan was - watch the sunset at "the end of Europe." Unfortunately, I was not our destiny. The sky that day was cloudy, so we could only see the change of color in the sky.  Conclusion? I need to go there once again and check if I will still continue to have mixed feelings about this place and to watch the already mentioned sunset.

Information for people who would like to go to this mysterious place.
Due to the fact that we had a rental car, and a day spent in the "paradise" Lagos (relation, of course, one day there will also be a blog), on getting there made us more difficulties. The cape is suddenly 40 km from Lagos and 6 km from the town of Sagres. Drivers can use the main road N125 from Lagos, then N268 towards Sagres. From the town of Sagres to Cape runs beautiful coastal road. As suggests the author of peregrynacje "after driving Sagres, near the sea cliffs, go to the roundabout, drive straight (south) you will go on the peninsula of Ponta de Sagres to Fortaleza, and by taking the right (west) exit you will reach the Cape São Vicente. "

Zmotoryzowani mogą skorzystać z głownej trasy  N125 z Lagos, a następnie N268 w kierunku do Sagres. Z miasteczka Sagres do Przylądka prowadzi piekna nadmorska droga.

to be continued...
